In accordance the federal DURC policy, PIs have certain responsibilities:
- Notify the IRE as soon as:
- The PI’s research involves on or more of the agents or toxins listed on the IRE homepage.
- The PI’s research with one or more of the agents also produces or may produce one or more of the 7 effects listed on the IRE homepage.
- Work with the IRE to assess the dual use risks and benefits of the DURC and to develop risk mitigation measures.
- Conduct DURC according to the provisions in the risk mitigation plan.
- Be aware of and comply with all institutional and USG policies and requirements for oversight of DURC.
- Ensure that laboratory personnel are familiar with and trained on DURC.
- Communicate research and research findings in a responsible manner.
Procedure for Reporting of Potential DURC
When a PI’s research involves one or more of the listed agents, then the PI is required to self-report using the PI Self-Identification Form available on the Forms page under IRE.
