PI Responsibilities

In accordance the federal DURC policy, PIs have certain responsibilities:

  1. Notify the IRE as soon as:
    1. The PI’s research involves on or more of the agents or toxins listed on the IRE homepage.
    2. The PI’s research with one or more of the agents also produces or may produce one or more of the 7 effects listed on the IRE homepage.
  2. Work with the IRE to assess the dual use risks and benefits of the DURC and to develop risk mitigation measures.
  3. Conduct DURC according to the provisions in the risk mitigation plan.
  4. Be aware of and comply with all institutional and USG policies and requirements for oversight of DURC.
  5. Ensure that laboratory personnel are familiar with and trained on DURC.
  6. Communicate research and research findings in a responsible manner.

Procedure for Reporting of Potential DURC

When a PI’s research involves one or more of the listed agents, then the PI is required to self-report using the PI Self-Identification Form available on the Forms page under IRE.
