Battery Disposal

Battery Recycling

Only dry alkaline batteries may be disposed of as trash. All other batteries removed from instruments and equipment purchased by MSU will be collected and sorted for recycling.

Common battery types collected for recycling include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Sealed Lead Acid (commonly found in UPS power supplies)
  • Nickel metal hydride
  • Ni-cad
  • Lithium (common in cell phones, laptop computer)

Batteries must be placed individually in plastic bags which can then be collected in a battery recycling box. Bags and boxes may be obtained from the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS). Battery pick-up requests may be submitted via the online hazardous waste pick-up ticket on the EHS website or by calling 5-3294.

Currently there is no charge for battery disposal.

Contact EHS for disposal instructions for car batteries.
